Calhoun City Schools Achieves 2016 GSBA Exemplary School Board Status For Consecutive Year

Calhoun City Schools has once again received exemplary status! We are proud to announce the achievement and status of the Georgia School Boards Association’s (GSBA) 2016 Exemplary School Board recognition.

The recognition program was designed to showcase best practices in school governance and leadership. GSBA recognizes good school board governance to foster educational community cultures in order to advance student learning and achievement.

Calhoun City Schools met and or exceeded the criteria set forth by GSBA to earn this honor of a 2016 Exemplary Board. The GSBA Governance Team Recognition Program was developed by Georgia superintendents and board members based on the state board of education’s standards for effective governance to recognize exemplary leadership. In 1998, the Georgia School Boards Association was one of the first school board associations in the nation to develop a program of standards for local boards of education. The GSBA Board recognition program is a three-year, three tiered program.

Beacon Award Presented to

Brandi Owczarz

The Times was honored at the Georgia School Boards Association Annual Conference with a Beacon Award, for its exceptional work in the field of education reporting.

The newspaper was recognized along with four other newsprint institutions at the Georgia School Boards Association/Georgia School Superintendents Association Annual Conference. The GSBA Beacon Award is given annually to media organizations or individual reporters or editors who have shown a willingness to go above and beyond the call of duty to report educational issues to their communities.

The Calhoun City Board of Education nominated the Times for the award because of the dedication it has shown to the profession and to providing citizens with thorough and accurate information about the school system.“Student and teacher activities at all grade levels and in all schools receive coverage at some point during the year, as do school sporting events, stated Michele Taylor, superintendent. "Our community is well-informed about state and federal school issues, school construction, major curricular initiatives, budgets and tax issues, state legislation impacting local school systems and all facets of education."
